AboutI am an aspiring novelist and occasional "play theorist." I have taken a break from attempting to start my novel for now and am currently attempting to develop an appreciation for older literature. I am currently reading my way through Hemingway and have been blogging chapter by chapter reflections about my experience.
I am a gamer and often use gaming as a lens through which to view life. I have learned a lot from gaming both practical and philosophical. I believe that every problem has a solution, we gain experience through playing our game of life. Levels of video games are layered in much the same way as stages of life. Each stage builds on what was learned in the last stage until at the end we have developed such a level of competence that those who stand against us become simple challenges. We don't often realize the dramatic increase in our level. WE take for granted out abilities and forget what shaped us and pushed us on our path and made us better. As a gamer and writer I often use character sheets from Role Playing Games to form the backstory and establish the level of a protagonist. I need to be conscious of the level of a character so that I can set them up with challenges that they can actually beat. Below is a character sheet which I have written up for myself. The game system asks the players to summarize different periods of the player characters life and then bind them together with an aspect which reflects lessons learn or attitudes that emerged during that time. The list is then topped off by a High Concept and Trouble aspect which describes the character at his best as well as his vulnerabilities and character faults. I apologize for my hand writing. |
